Wishbone's Story

Wishbone came from a shelter in Iowa. He has had a very difficult time in his short life.

He belonged to a family who bought him as a puppy. The kids in the home were rough with him and fractured the femur in his right hind leg. This is a large bone and doesn't fracture easily, so we can't imagine what happened to him - and don't really want to think about it.

The home had a single mom who couldn't afford to take him to a vet. An unknown animal advocate group stepped in and took him to a veterinarian. Unfortunately, that vet didn't quite get the surgery right. The leg didn't heal well and was kept immobile in an extended position for far too long.  The vet bills mounted and he was abandoned at the clinic for over 3 months. Finally, the vet clinic took him to a shelter.  Thankfully, the shelter called Fox Terrier Rescue.

He was evaluated by Dr. Frost, who helped us so much over the years with our special cases and has helped to send many of our rescues off to new homes healthy and happy.  Dr. Frost said she would have no problem doing the surgery to repair the fracture and would expect complete success with the bone healing.  Unfortunately, because of the way the leg had been splinted and kept immobile for 3 months, he had developed extreme muscle contracture in the knee and hock joints and the leg would always be completely stiff, unable to bend. He would never be able to use it.

It was decided that the only thing we could do for Wishbone was to have the leg amputated.  On July 28th he underwent surgery for the amputation. Once the surgery was over, he would no longer had that useless leg causing him pain and problems.

Dogs with 3 legs do an amazing job of adjusting, running, jumping and playing. I remember well the 3 dogs from the mill in Missouri that had to have legs amputated in 2005. They are all happy and living normal lives in Denver, Colorado. I know this will be true for my Wishbone, too.
Wishbone is home now and doing great. The post surgery pictures were taken at Avenue of the Saints Animal Hospital.  Katie is the vet tech who did most of his after surgery care. You can see she really enjoyed him and said he is such a lover. (:-) Our Boy is up walking, running and doing fine. He is a little sore yet, so I restrict his activity somewhat, and he had to wear the dreaded E-Collar since he wanted to lick and chew the sutures. Thanks to Dr Phyllis Frost and all of the wonderful staff at Avenue of The Saints, Wishbone will have a chance at the life he deserves.

Wishbone is a one year old healthy, happy, loving, sweet Angel who has had nothing but bad luck so far. He loves everyone, including children, other dogs and anyone who will play. He is especially fond of toys, playing in the fenced yard and treats. He is house trained but needs to be reminded. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, microchipped, on Heartworm prevention and completely healthy. He is a special needs dog with a LOT of love and years to give a family willing to adopt him.  He will show you just how determined a Wire is to be happy.

If you have the open mind and heart to adopt my special boy please contact ccswires@netins.net Wishbone and I live in Iowa, and we know the right family is waiting to meet him. He is one of the really special ones who deserves to have his life turn around.
